Meldreth to Cambridge Walk

Today I was invited out on a walk by Caroline & Ray. We caught the train to Meldreth and then did the 18+mile walk back to Cambridge via Wimpole, Kingston, Hardwick and Coton. Interestingly this is the first time I have ever walked back to Cambridge in the past I’ve always walked away and then returned on the train. For today’s walk this had the huge advantage of having the sun behind us all day. Whereas on my last walk with Sally the sun was in our eyes for most the day, very uncomfortable at this time of the year when the sun is at such a low angle in the sky.

However, due to our speed of travel and stops at a couple of pubs we ended up walking from Coton in the dark – lovely clear skies and a very bright moon and Venus – but hazardous with the cyclists.

Here’s the walk with photographs.

Winter Solstice walk

Today was the shortest day and we celebrated it in gorgeous sunshine with a walk by the Cambridge Rambling Club A team, ably led by  Larry & Margaret . A decent turn out of 14 hikers did the over 14 mile circular walk from Balsham via Brinkley.

A surprising hilly walk with a total climb of 1700ft in the day!  across quite a few freshly ploughed fields. The walk was enhanced with mulled wine and minced pies 🙂

What a mess!

Here is the window dressing, last Saturday, at the main Boots store in Cambridge, Have you ever seen such a mess? Reminded me of Woolworths before they gave up the ghost, their old store is now a Next.
I wonder what the Boots will become? Maybe Mr Tesco should take it on -given how busy the Sydney Street Sainsbury is.

Autumnal Observations

A few notes from my walk around Cambridge today. The guy I know who runs a tiling warehouse store (I was his first customer 15 years ago) said the bottom just fell out of his market 3 weeks ago. He is a loyal Barclays customer with a 40K overdraft, without warning or for any reason they suddenly decided they want him to pay 11% for his overdraft! Impossible for him to change banks, the other banks are not taking on new business customers!

The gym I joined , to get a decent clean swimming pool, gave me 15months membership for the price of 11 plus I got loads of visitor passes for Sally to use. The gym seemed very busy.

The queues at the tills in White Stuff for their midseason sale where humungous and the shop was heaving.

The outdoor shop Open Air was totally deserted…

The Apple store was packed, as usual.

The streets were busy with the new students and it is a glorious autumnal day.
