Saga getting into social networking

Received this from Saga today:-
We are pleased to announce that we have recently introduced a photo gallery function to Saga Zone, allowing members to upload and share photographs. Once you have logged in, you can click on the Gallery Tutorial link on the Home Page to see what it is all about and then start creating your own photo albums from the comfort of your own home.

To celebrate this, we are running a fun competition called PetZfactor which is open to everyone.

If you think your disobedient dog, cheeky chinchilla or glamorous goldfish has the PetZfactor, you are invited to upload a photo, along with a description of up to 50 words explaining why your pet deserves to win. The closing date for entries is 20th April 2008.

An expert judging panel will then shortlist pets in categories including: cats, dogs, small animals, fish, reptiles, large animals and other pets, with the top ten shortlisted participants in each category being displayed on Saga Zone until 12th May 2008 with a function allowing members to vote for their favourites.

The winners will be announced on 26th May 2008 and will be treated to a professional photo shoot, while also being crowned with the glory of becoming the Saga Zone 2008 pet with the PetZfactor.

Simply click on the green submit image button below to login in and take part as it promises to be great fun.”

Think I will give it a miss 🙂

Google and links

Started to look into my Google Webmaster tools for geoffjones.com.

I was amazed to see that the  Google statistics show that I have 14,170 external links pointing to geoffjones.com  mainly to the home page.External links to geoffjones.com

Upon drilling down I discovered that 8,649 of the links are from Doc Searls, which is incredible as I can only remember him mentioning me in a couple of posts, although I do appear in his sidebar and I have commented on several posts over the years. I can’t help thinking in the words of Private Eye shurely shome mishtake!

Google has also indexed ‘only’ 205 of the  884 links my sitemap has submitted.

Anyway, many thanks to all the other readers who have provided me with links especially, Philip, Ellee, Sally & Duncan.

Geoff and his metabolic rate..

Interesting article in wikihow on calculating and increasing your metabolic rate:-

  1. Calculate your resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR is often used interchangeably with basal metabolic rate (BMR); although they are slightly different, estimating either is sufficient for the purpose of losing weight. To calculate your RMR, use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (which is more reliable than the Harris-Benedict equation[2]). There are also calculators online that can do this for you:
    • RMR = 9.99w + 6.25s – 4.92a + 166g-161
    • w = weight in kilograms; if you know your weight in pounds, divide by 2.2 to get your weight in kilograms
    • s = height in centimeters; if you know your height in inches, multiply by 2.54 to get your height in centimeters
    • a = age in years
    • g = gender = 1 for males, 0 for females

So for my good self my RMR is : (9.99*83)+(6.25*180)-(4.92*60)+166-161 = 1664 so my daily consumption to maintain myweight should be RMR x 1.15 which for me is 1664 * 1.15 = 1914 cals per day.

So to increase your metabolic rate you need to be male, young, tall and heavy!

Also, apparently, muscle burns 77cals/Kg/day and fat only burns 4cals/Kg/day although how you calculate what weight of muscle you have is a mystery to me…

Other interesting stuff like the importance of drinking water and eating many small meals.
