Good evening all!

You really couldn’t make this stuff up!

In The Guardian we have “one stipulation by senior commanders was that undercover officers should be married” and “Undercover police officers routinely adopted a tactic of “promiscuity” with the blessing of senior commanders”

So you just tell the missus, I’m going undercover for a while (to have a good shag) but, don’t worry, I will be back!

What ever would Andy Crawford’s missus have said in Dixon of Dock Green!

Inside out Sauna

Tonight is our last night in the sauna Dubai, the sauna over here is the reverse of the UK or Finland! inside the AC keeps the temperature and humidity to bearable levels outside its 42deg + with I reckon 80% humidity this means the house windows mist up on the outside :-) tonights swim was in a pool that is COOLED down to 32 degrees!

Such weather means that outdoor activities are kept to the minimum :-)

After our Sunday sleep we managed a trip out into the desert and to the Hatta mountains where Nick managed to navigate to a rock pool which provided an excellent wild swimming opportunity for Sally and I, the water was at bath temperature so a bit different than when we were in Corsica :-) Here’s the trips and pics on Everytrail.

On Monday we went to explore the souks of old Dubai and to have an abra ride across the creek. The outside temperatures were pretty unbearble so we beat an early retreat with a later trip to rthe comfort of the Dubai Mall to see the fountains and ice skating. The gold souk trip is here on Everytrail.

Today we ventured on the palm to the Atlantis hotel to see the aquarium. Hoever, they have decided to charge now so we departed leaving the fishes to their fate. Later we took the metro to the Dubai Mall which has a huge aquarium with probably the largest piece of glass/perspex in the world as a  FREE viewing window. We then paid to take a glass bottomed boat trip on the top of the aquarium. Excellent marketing! Later we ascended 124 floors (in one lift!) of the 200 floors inside the Burj Khalifa, a pretty impressive lift! and views.

A pretty enjoyable time apart from the heat, best time to be here is after October before March. It’s pretty expensive for food, clothes, electronics etc Guiness is £7+ a pint all probably on a par with Les Gets.

Tomorrow we land in Beijing for my first trip to mainland China :-)

Do I or Don’t I?

I have this set of magnificent maps and guides all in German of The Rhine cycle route. The question is at 1kg do I take them tomorrow? The route is in my GPS and on my Eee ( the iPad is staying at home since it’s incapable of syncing the Etrex and geotagging my camera :-( )

So I should be OK but then…. >

this is also an experiment in posting via another Posterous http://posterous.com account I’ve set up.

Remote blogging

Last night I tried to set up another Posterous account so I could post here. However, apparently you can only post to one site with each email address so no joy with that then, as I already use Posterous with geoffjones.net !

I’m now trying to use the iPhone wordpress app, which rather annoyingly just lost my words of wisdom whilst trying to attach a photo! Rule number one from the past, save and then save again before attempting anything!

Haven’t succeeded in adding any links yet :-(

So here is my view from Wetherspoons at Gatwick (must save NOW)

Biking with Bikely

Today whilst researching my upcoming bike ride down the length of The Rhine I came across the website Bikely, this amazingly allows you to trace over Google Maps and generate gpx files that my Garmin understands. I can thus plan the whole 1000mile route and let the Garmin Etrex behave like a TomTom device to tell me where to go. Bikely can even follow roads and thus create really accurate files.

An even better discovery was that the user “MockCyclist” had even created a map with the whole route plotted. A fantastic starting point, I’m now modifying his file to cut out the ferries that MockCyclist had used in Rotterdam and some other points on The Rhine.

I’m going to start from where I finished last year, My apartment in Les Gets, probably around the 7th July. I have to be back for my birthday on the 28th!

Here is the route so far:-

All 1000 miles of it!

Sunday’s walk around Pakenham

With the Cambridge Rambling Club  A team skirting the coastline of the Isle of Wight. Sally and I decided to do a jaunt with the Newmarket Ramblers. Debbie led 15 of us on a good walk around the Suffolk countryside, it was advertised as 11 but ended up at 12.3. A good pace was kept up and my heel was really pleased it was only a 5 hour stroll.

Here is the walk on Everytrail plus some pics of Pakenham Water Mill where T treated Debbie, Sally and I to a gorgeous tea and cakes in the mill.

iPad first post

iPad welcome screen

Experimenting with the WordPress app on my new iPad.

Beginning to love the iPad especially the HUGE Fonts available, in fact it’s rather weird going back to the iPhone! the iPad is ideal for us oldies with failing eyesight.

A problem for new entrants is that you need a computer & iTunes account to get it set up in the first place! This could be very very disappointing for folks thinking of getting one as their first and only computer.

Will I take it on my walks? Weighing in at 858gm with it’s £30 black case (yes pandammonium, Sally made me get one) compared to my Eee at 968gm is excellent! And now with the camera adapter (£25 in UK) it can backup my photos daily. However, it still has a major failing that I can’t back up my Garmin gpx files or geotag my pics. Maybe Ascent and Photolinker will do iPad apps :-)

So yes it will be coming to the great Italian wedding with me but still undecided about China.

Oh, still can’t work out how to add links with the wordpress app :-(

p.s. Links added on iMac

Scribefire now available for Chrome

Just trying out the new scribefire extension for chrome, looking good so far. Lets insert an image:-

Oh dear it needs a url, so already has to be on the web. No browse option
Dragging images in only gives this Photo Booth-1.jpg
Lets add a link to Mr Frisk winning the Grand National when Em was born/
That seems OK
Is this the last nail in Firefox’s coffin :-(

Standon circular walk

Today’s walk with the Cambridge Rambling Club A team was a circular walk starting from Standon and then heading over to Much Hadham. Christine ably led the walk and 10 of us set off on the hottest day of the year so far! Mud rain & snow were but distant memories :-) Here is the walk:-

Map your trip with EveryTrail

During Sally’s mega shopping trip I treated myself to some Inov8 trail shoes which I tried out today. I felt a bit of a fraud as I didn’t seem a ‘proper’ walker. They are just so much lighter than wearing boots. My heels still started to hurt at the 12 mile mark after the damage caused by my Thames Path walk,. Hopefully, the bruising on my heels will go away with time. Otherwise they seemed fine, although still uncertain about walking through long wet grass with them.
