Quintessential England on The Scholars’ Way

I have now finished the first walk designed by myself, although obviously others have trod a similar path in the past to get to the University of Cambridge :-)

My requirements were to walk from Cambridge to Oxford keeping as straight a line as possible and avoiding all roads.

Once I started mapping using Memory Map, it became obvious that this is simply a walk through what everyone imagines England as it used to be. Rolling green countryside abundant Oaks, Beech Foxes and wildlife plus some of the most unspoilt villages in the country. An added bonus are the great houses at Wimpole Hall, Woburn Abbey and Waddesdon Manor. During the walk I also discovered that it goes through some of our finest nature reserves from the miniscule Paradise in Cambridge to the immense Stockgrove CountryPark and the Green Sand Trust to, who have thought, the two moors at Flitwick Nature reserve!.

Cambridge to Oxford Walk – Widget powered by EveryTrail: GPS Geotagging

The Route takes in small parts of The Clopton Way, The Skylark Ride, The Navigators Way, The Bunyan Trail (amusingly sponsored by Scholl shoes :-) ), Greensand Ridge Walk, Two Moors Heritage Trail, Seven Parishes Millenium Circular walk, Woburn walk, Stockgrove Country Park Circular Walk, Bucks Circular Walk, Cross Bucks Way, Matthews Way Village Link, North Bucks Way, Bernwood Jubilee Way, Oxfordshire Way & the CPRE Oxford Green Belt Way.

Plus the famous windmills at Brill (Loved the company name Brill Computers!), Quainton and also Stukeley famous for its authentic Norman church, longest village high street and London’s proposed third airport 40 years ago (the walk crosses the proposed main runway)

All the photographs are up on Picasa and Flickr (I’m at the point of leaving Flickr like its founders) and also maps can be found at Wikiloc, Everytrail and Google Maps (Nope I can’t decide which is best either).

Apparently Cicerone published a book in 1995 by James A. Lyons called “An Oxbridge Walk” now out of print but readily available.

Others ideas are to get Green King interested in offering free beers (their Loch Fyne chain is in Cambridge, Woburn and Oxford and also they have recently taken out the main Oxford brewers. I have a novel idea how they may do this to everyones benefit :-)

Oh the coolest thing of all, for anyone over 60 who lives in England its free travel between Oxford and Cambridge on the Stagecoach X5 with buses every 30minutes, both ways, through the day. The bus is never more than 8 miles from the walk! What other walk anywhere in the world can offer that!

Many thanks to Sally and Ellee for their blog posts on this too :-)

Here is a markwall1977 going phishing on MSN

Clicking on the link takes you to a lovely suspected web forgery Firefox warning:-

As you can see he is trying to get hold of your MSN login details….

Searching for him in google remarkably doesn’t reveal any of his nefarious activities, only that he his known on database forums;-

All very interesting….Update:- Looks like he was a victim of a phishing attack after reading this article

Three strikes and you are in….

Fred did an interesting post on Zemanta One of my favorite VC quotes comes from Bill Kaiser of Greylock. He once said, “when I hear about a company once, I often ignore it, when I hear about it twice, I pay attention, when I hear about it for the third time, I take a meeting”…. ” Zemanta is a blogging tool plugin that provides a set of advanced services for finding related content (photos and related posts). It also provides something I’ve wanted for a long time, a way to do a tumblr style reblog in typepad.”
Zemata edit screen

So I downloaded the self hosted WordPress plugin. This puts an attractive column alongside the main editing screen in WP . Every 300 characters it displays new links and images based on the words you type. As well as filling in your tags and link fields.

Not entirely clear what relevance the image of a young geisha writing a blog is! or a large building in Sacramento!

The links and tags seem better.

There are also options for entering in your amazon affiliates name. So I guess if you recommend a book like Black Swan it will automatically add my affilate name.

Black SwanThats way cool, by adding the words “black swan” to this post , suddenly images of them appeared in the side bar!Image via Wikipedia

Sorry for the pun I know in California its three strikes and you are in prison!

Tale of two bridges..

Today was the official opening of the £3million pound Riverside Bridge in Cambridge, Partially funded by Tesco through a s106 agreement on its Newmarket Road store (All we know is that £1.7million came from 3rd party sources). Isn’t it crazy that the exact amounts are not easily publicly available and that it seems council policy to obfuscate the data.

The bridge is interesting as that it bifurcates into separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians, although my bet is that pedestrians will use the cycle lane when its wet and slippy. It contains a rather flash and expensive looking seating arrangement. There isa selection of photos on my flickr account.

Here is the Cutter Ferry bridge just upstream of the glittering new landmark, replaced a couple of years ago (including all the bridge supports etc). Precise cost not known but the year that it was included in the County Council (2003/04) budget we know that the TOTAL spend on ALL bridges in the county was £2.6million pounds so its fair to assume that it probably only cost £500K or so. (Although once again were do you find the information?).

So is the new bridge value for money or would the other £2.5m or so been spent on other cycling bridge initiative’s in Cambridge? and when are we going to get meaningful transparency in local government budgets!

Linking to Duofertility

Received an email from Shamus at Duofertility (Warning! I’m the smallest shareholder in their parent company Cambridge Temperature Concepts) saying how well they are getting on with the UK national press with mentions in the Daily Mail and The Telegraph.

However, as I mentioned at the recent AGM what counts for an online marketing company is google ranking and getting links from other websites.

I make it about 23 sites that mention the word Duofertility and according to the links search at google they only have about 9 external links :-( Standard google search shows 1280 mentions for duofertility)

So some work to do yet….

Here is the picture today from googlealerts :-

No Problem in Ely

A great day walking in the Ely area today with Sally, amazing we rattled of 16 miles without a thought :-)

Ely Area Circular Walk – Widget powered by EveryTrail: GPS Geotagging

The highlight was meeting up with Vic & Sue from “Retirement with No Problem”.
P6040160.JPG

I have been following there travels around the English waterways in their canal boat for the past 3 years or so. So it was excellent to meet them in person, what a truly wonderful couple both very sociable with Sue being the techie who handles the steering and all the blogging, keeping up with the latest radio modems etc.

All the pictures are up on my flickr and I’m sure Sally will be saying a lot more on her blog :-)

The big talking point was the price of diesel which at Ely was £1.05 per litre for boaters for cars at Tesco it was £1.31 per litre and the farmers diesel (Rapeseed Oil) was in Tesco was £1.19 per litre. A boater we met earlier was thinking of adding a heater to the diesel fuel line so he could use neat rape seed oil!
